The Burton Family has been singing for a long time. Leroy Burton Sr., began singing with his family as a child growing up. At the age of 16 years, he began singing with a quartet (a group of friends he grew up with). Later in life he obeyed the gospel and married. After obeying the gospel, he stopped singing with the quartet, and was one of the song leaders at the church of Christ, leading songs in the church for many years. He and his wife Betty, became friends with Zeno & Doris Barnum, and M.C. & Nardell Burns. Knowing Leroy's background in singing, they decided to form a group just for the fun of it. The group consisted of Leroy, his wife Betty, his brother Ernest Burton, Zeno & Doris Barnum, and M.C. & Nardell Burns. They went from house to house singing and fellowshipping with one another. They decided to give themselves a name. Zeno said, (in his serious comical way) let's call ourselves the "Mighty Bs" (they all laughed.)
As the years went by; the Burns moved to Midway, Texas and assumed a Gospel work there. The Barnums took a Gospel work in Tamina and dropped out of the group. Leroy, determined to sing, kept singing with his wife Betty, His brothers Ernest,Sr., & J.W., his sister Leanner, and his oldest daughter Melanie. (Later Melanie married and moved to New Mexico). After a couple of years, Melanie moved back to Texas (Dallas area). Melanie took her place once again singing with the family whenever possible.
Leroy Sr, realizing singing is what kept his siblings and himself together, invited his oldest son, Leroy Jr., to sing with the group. Leroy Jr., was happy to be a member of the group and enjoyed singing, he soon took a leadership role in the group. (He was about 16 years old at the time).
Through the years the following family members have sung with this group, known as the Mighty Bs:
Leroy Sr.'s sister, Katherine Burton Jones, enjoyed singing with this group and sang until her departure from this life in 1999. Katherine's husband, (Craig) also sang for a while. Three more of Leroy's sons, Isaac, Nicolas and Derrick (known as 'the 3 boys'), joined the group with a little encouragement from their dad. Isaac's bass, Derrick's tenor and Nicolas' lead, took the group to another level. Later J.W.'s son Kevin joined the group. J.W.'s wife Eula and daughter Diane also joined. The group was enjoying themselves singing and making melody in their hears to the Lord. Whenever someone would allow them to sing, they sang with joy in their hearts.
Ernest's wife Ruby later decided to join the group, however her work schedule kept her from remaining in the group, she soon had to drop out. But their son, Calvin Burton, and son-in-law John Busch, joined in with the family, now well known as the Mighty Bs. Leroy Jr's wife and Calvin's wife sang with the Mighty Bs for a short period. Leroy Sr's other two daughters (Michelle Burton Fisher and Tara Burton Criner) never sang with the group, however Michelle's husband Gregory Fisher is a group member and sings with the Mighty Bs whenever his schedule allows.
Finally, Leroy Sr's youngest son Dexter joined the group and sings with them from time to time.
One of the favorite pass-times for this group is singing and making melody in their hearts to God. They love to sing and whenever the Burton family get together there is always singing and praising the Lord, no matter what the occasion.
*This CD is dedicated to the life and memory of Katherine Burton Jones who sang with the Mighty Bs for many years.
